Throughout time and space, landscapes as we know them have evolved. They’ve changed with fads, been forgot, and preserved in their “natural” form. This project spans from the 1st to the 17th centuries, moving like a timeline across the country of focus. Looking from Italy to China, how public spaces and private gardens change from century-to-century and country-to-country will be highlighted. Discussion of each space will include the following: INTENDED VIEWS—was this a place where one was meant to look out at the surrounding landscape, or inward to the space itself? PRIMARY USE—what was this place used for? Agriculture, a public open space, a display of power? INTENDED PURPOSE—was this space meant to sacred or secular? Why? ORDERING SYSTEM—orthogonal, rounded, radiating forms, trapezoidal, organically formed? Theatrical, connected spaces?
